MMXVI: Year in Review
Today is Sunday the 1st of January, 2017.
I'm 19. I live in the Netherlands. I'm back home for Christmas. It feels like time stands still here.
I'm in the process of making a little video - a "where I am now" type project, if you will, so I thought instead of repeating myself on here, I'd answer some lengthier questions I would like to look back on in the future...
i n r e t r o s p e c t
What new things did you discover about yourself this year?
I've discovered that I'm incredibly comfortable living alone. Moving out has been an incredibly smooth process. I love where I've moved to, I love the independence, I love the ease, I love the flexibility. I'm appreciating all the small things, and I'm grateful and happy.
I've also discovered where my focus and priorities lie. I've discovered there is nothing I want to do with my life more than traveling. That was an overwhelming realization having just started university but I want the two paths to co-exist and the biggest challenge for me at the moment is to make them work.
What single achievement are you most proud of?
I'm proud of the fact that I'm successfully staying true to myself in my new environment. I'm proud of my focus and my goal-orientatedness.
On the more tangible, I'm proud of the scholarship I got for my first year.
What was the best news you received?
Being accepted into university and getting my visa after the biggest paperwork struggle.
What was your favorite place that you visited in 2016?
California. No doubt. San Francisco and Los Angeles were just...wow.
What was the most important lesson you learned in 2016?
You're allowed to, and should, take a break every once in a while. It's okay to be tired and it's okay for things to not be perfectly executed. Shit messes up sometimes, you just have to take it and work around/through it.
What little things did you most enjoy during your day-to-day?
Driving places. Music playing.
Having coffee in the mornings. The cold breeze on my warm just-woke-up face.
The terrace at 4am. The highway it overlooks. All the writing that place has sparked.
Clear blue skies
A good work-out session
A good drawing session
A good writing session
What cool things did you create this year?
Still filling up my 'Deja Vu' journal that I started at the beginning of the year.
Made a bunch of videos.
Filled up a couple disposables (that still need developing!)
What was your most common mental state this year?
Looking Forward. If that's a mental state.
1. Visited California
2. Moved out
3. Visited NL
4. First time in Europe
5. Flew solo
...I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
What major goal did you lay the foundations for?
Practicing Psychology - the foundation's getting my BSc and then whatever else I decide to do.
Traveling - already in Europe so a lot more of the world is accessible for me living in NL + looking for work opportunities around the continent lol
What experience would you love to do all over again?
California. There's a major recurring theme in my life right now.
How did your overall outlook on life evolve?
I think I'm looking at everything from a perspective of what can I make out of this; tangible or otherwise. I try to create a lot more and use my daily life as inspiration. I also try to process things more simply to not stress myself out unnecessarily.
